    Alf and Chris "When David Wilkinson and I decided to make a film of Alf's book about Yorkshire, we pleaded with him to appear. He was a very unassuming and shy man, but graciously accepted, baffled that anyone would want to see him on film.

    "Between the approach and the time we made the film Alf had become very ill; we later found that he had nearly died three weeks earlier. Against advice from his family he insisted on appearing because as he said - he had promised, therefore he would appear no matter what.

    "Sadly this was the last time I saw him.

    "Alf was respected, admired and loved by his family, by the hundreds who knew him personally and by the millions who knew him through his books. The film of James Herriot's Yorkshire, is now my personal tribute to a very great man - Alf Wight; James Herriot."
