Today's walk: The Wasdale Horseshoe (Wainwright's Outlying Fells p248)

a rough start from the A6 summit

it would have been easier to walk south to the gate onto this track beside the wall

a very fleeting patch of sun on Little Yarlside with Great Yarlside beyond

Great Yarlside and Little Yarlside from Whatshaw Common

Crookdale and Lord's Seat from Whatshaw Common

Crookdale and High House Bank from the slopes of Little Yarlside

looking back at Whatshaw Common over Wasdale Mouth from Little Yarlside

Great Yarlside from Little Yarlside

looking east over Little Yarlside from the slopes of Great Yarlside ..

.. and east again from the unusual trig point

stormy skies southwards from Great Yarlside

I had just seen a baby snake when I found this notice

looking towards Great Saddle Crag on the Wet Sleddale Horseshoe

looking east towards the Pennines - the two black spots are skylarks

zooming in towards the white hut at the starting point on the A6

this was the only cairn I could find on the vague summit of Wasdale Pike
- not a bit like the one in the book

awful going heading down to Wasdale Head

the abandoned farmstead at Wasdale Head

the track back to the A6 is also abandoned and in awful condition

AW does not mention having to wade this deep and fast stream Wasdale Beck ..

.. nor the final irritation of a padlocked gate - perhaps it opened in his day
