Match Report:
Former St Jame's Park favourite, Stuart Storer, helped drag the Grecians deeper into trouble at the bottom of the Division 3 table, after his 70-yard dash created the only goal for Ian Baird in the 25th minute.
The Brighton skipper was on hand to stab home Storer's right-wing cross which deflected in off City keeper Ashley Bayes to send the Grecians slipping to a fourth league defeat in six winless outings.
The home side dug deep into the character reserves to repel constant Exeter pressure throughout a one-sided second half as the Grecians laid seige to Mark Ormerod's goal. Bayes was never called upon to makes a serious s\ave either before or after Baird's goal; City won the corner count 5-2, and it was the home side's supperters calling for the final wistle at the end.
Brighton dominated the territtory, until Baird's winning goal. That appeared to be the signal for the Seagulls to sit back and and let Exeter take control of the game. But the loyal band of away travellers had to wait until the 56th minute before home goalkeeper Orerod was forced into serious action.
Ormerod produced a stunning point-blank save from the debutant Lee Baddeley's powerful close-range header from an inswinging Darren Hughes corner. With Fox throwing on attacking substitues Sufyan Ghazghazi and Barry McConnell within 16 minutes of the restart, the Grecians were committed to searching for an equaliser.
A goal looked unlikely in the first 45 minutes when Steve Flack and Leon Braithwaite again struggled to gell together. With loanee Jason Rees particularly impressive, the home side became increasingly nervous. The lively Ghazghazi was denied by a superb Stuart Tuck tackle, Rees and Jason Minett both fired wide from 20 yards, and Denny Mundee hacked off the line as Flack, Blake and Baddeley all closed in on another inswinging Hughes corner.
Exeter's best chance fell to Noel Blake five minutes from time. He found himself unmarked on the left-hand edge of the six-yard box, but couldn't direct his first-time volley on target.
