| Not
only have our own Exeter City been setting the transfer
market alight of late - our £10,000 payment to Cardiff
for Steve Flack has been the biggest boost to the Welsh
economy since BSE sent lamb prices rocketing - but quite
a few ex-Grecians have been on the move of late. Here's an invaluable Good Time Coming
summary ... and no, we don't know what's happened to
Richard Young. Sorry.
RICHARD DRYDEN - £150,000, Bristol
City to Southampton
It's a return to the top flight for the man who Colin
Wanker spent a quarter of a million quid to lure away
from St James Park in 1991. Dryden's last experience of
Premier football wasn't a happy one, as he helped
Wanker's Notts County side to relegation, memorably
commenting that he had "finally adjusted to the pace
of football at this level" several weeks after Notts
had actually been relegated.
BRENDAN O'CONNELL - £125,000,
Barnsley to Charlton
£125,000 for Dean Edwards' less famous striking partner!
Whatever next, a million pound offer for Steve Pugh? Does
anybody else remember singing "If you've all shagged
Brendan's missus clap your hands" when he was
playing for Burnley against us at Turf Moor ?
SHAUN TAYLOR - £50,000, Swindon to
Bristol City
The Ashton Gate boys lose out on Dryden but replace him
with Sir Shaun, as the former City skipper begins his
return journey to Devon. Back at St James Park by 1998 I
reckon, and that day can't come too soon.
RONNIE JEPSON - £40,000,
Huddersfield to Bury
Well, at least Bury's promotion means we won't have to
play against him. The measly £40,000 price tag is
interesting, I wonder how much Ron got in addition to
that ? I hope his wife can settle in Bury...
ADRIAN FOSTER - Free, Gillingham to
Hereford
Oh God, I forgot that this Plainmoor legend had actually
played for us. The worrying thing is, even if we had
wanted to sign a useless waste of space like Foster, his
wage demands would probably still have been too great for
our budget. Crikey.
MARTIN LING - Free, Swindon to
Leyton Orient
Here is a former City bauy who Foxy did try to tempt back
to St James Park. Needless to say our financial package -
£200 a week, plus free tickets to the Odeon on Mondays
and unlimited use of Humphrey B's at weekends - didn't
match that of the Londoners. Shame, as he would have been
an ideal replacement for Mark Gavin.
MARK GAVIN - Free, Exeter City to
Scunthorpe
And here is Mark Gavin at Scunthorpe, who we trust are
keeping him in the luxury to which he has become
accustomed at Exeter (lots of cash and lots of abuse from
the terraces!) His first team opportunities have been
limited, but needless to say he'll be selected - and will
turn it on - when Scunny play City.
MARK COOPER - Free, Exeter City to
Hartlepool
And Coops is plainly going to score half a dozen when
Hartlepool visit the Park on October 26th. In fact, I for
one shall be 'loaning' a tenner to Mr William Hill on
Mark Cooper to score the first goal.
IAN THOMPSTONE - Free, Rochdale to
Scarborough
The Tombstone continues his 'tour of the North' by
joining Scarborough. Surely there's only Rotherham to go
and he'll have completed his 'I-Spy Northern Shit-holes'
book.
PAUL BUCKLE - Non Contract, to
Northampton Town
Ah, so that's where he went. Another ex-Torquay boy who
had a try at life as a Grecian. Northampton visit the
Park early in October, so it will be interesting to see
if Buckle features against us, or if anyone recognises
him [other than Ashley Bayes - Scandal Mongering Ed].
