TV’s Newest Witch
This fall, Melissa Joan Hart stars on the new show “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch” on ABC. And you can still watch her on Nickelodeon’s “Clarissa Explains It All.” We brewed up some questions for her.
Nickelodeon Magazine: Are you a lot like Sabrina, the teenage witch?
Melissa Joan Hart: I think I’m more secure than Sabrina is. She’s more confused. When Sabrina finds out she’s a witch, she really doesn’t know what to do with herself. I’m more like Clarissa, because I’m Very good at working through my problems.
NM: Could Sabrina and Clarissa be friends?
MJH: I don’t know--maybe not. I think Clarissa might be a little too hyper and too high-energy for Sabrina.
NM: Is Sabrina a good witch or a bad witch?
MJH: Definitely a good witch. She uses her magic accidentally. She tries to do stuff for the good, but sometimes it backfires.
NM: Do you like Sabrina’s clothes better than Clarissa’s?
MJH: Sabrina’s clothes are more normal; she dresses the way I dress. When I started doing Clarissa, the clothes scared me a little. But then again, the show started some fashion trends, and I think that’s pretty cool.
NM: How is making a TV show different from making a movie?
MJH: When you work on a TV series, you get a sense of home. You get to know everyone, and you get to know the place, and that’s wonderful. But doing a movie is also a lot of fun, because you’re on location, and you get to meet new people all the time.
NM: Do you ever wish you had magical powers?
MJH: Sure. I’d like to be able to make my brother shut up. No, just kidding. I’d like to be able to freeze time. If I felt like sleeping late one day, I’d freeze time and sleep late. Or if I didn’t know the answer on a test, I’d freeze time and find it.
NM: Have you been a witch for Halloween?
MJH: I dressed up as Elvira. But I don’t know if that counts as a witch.
NM: What was your favorite Halloween costume as a kid?
MJH: One time, I put on my mom’s old bathrobe, some face cream, and hair curlers. That was easy, and I got a lot of candy.
NM: What’s your favorite candy?
MJH: I really like Twix. The crew of “Clarissa” used to give me boxes of them for my birthday.
NM: What scares you?
MJH: I’m scared of flying...in a plane, not on a broomstick. And when I was little, I was scared of throwing up. That’s how my fear of flying started-because I threw up on a plane once.
NM: Do you have your own broom?
MJH: I don’t have one. I’ll have to get one. That should be on my list of things to do.
