Seventeen Article "Are YOU Jealous?"

This article was kindly typed up by Tom Huston

The following article/interview appeared on page 44 of the Janurary, 1994 issue of SEVENTEEN magazine.
The article is in three columns, with a picture of picture of Melissa in the top left-hand corner of the article, and a picture of actor, Eric Niess, in the bottom right. The caption and Melissa's photo read: "Melissa Joan Hart explains it all to...", and Eric's: "...Eric (The Grind) Nies" The name of the column is "GIRL MEETS BOY", and the title of the article is "Are YOU Jealous?".
The heading below the title reads: And now, a few words from MTV's Eric and Nickelodeon's "Clarissa" Along the side of the article, running up the page: Hart and Niess photos, William Milliot. Hair, makeup, and grooming, Matsumi.

Call it a "meeting of the minds." Or call it "We talk to a famous guy and a famous girl about various unsolved mysteries involving the relations between the sexes." Either way, here's the very first installment of Girl Meets Boy, in which we introduced Eric Nies, star of MTV's "The Grind" (not to mention his own calendar), to Melissa Joan Hart, star of Nickelodeon's "Clarissa Explains It All."

seventeen: Hey, Eric, what makes you jealous? Like, if you're with a girl and you're not paying attention to her, and she goes to talk to another guy just to see how you act....

Eric: That ain't happening. No way. If that ever happened---forget it. I don't think I'd be jealous, I'd think she's crazy. Give me another example.

Melissa: Here, I'll give you an example. I do this once in a while with my boyfriend---I just bring up a guy's name, just to see how he responds.

seventeen: How do you casually bring up another guy's name, Melissa?

Melissa: Like, I get mail from other guys [Clarissa fans] and whatever, so I go, "Oh, um, look what he wrote," and he just goes, "Well, I don't care."

seventeen: So he get jealous.

Melissa: A little bit.

seventeen: Eric, do you ever try to make girls jealous?

Eric: Sometimes I'll bring up other girl's names---but, I mean, maybe not on purpose, I just do it without even thinking about it. Like, I wouldn't do it to my girlfriend, but I would do that to a girl who I'm trying to talk to.

seventeen: To feel out the situation.

Eric: Right. I would use that as, like, kind of a tool, to see what she's thinking, because if you give them something that's going to maybe make them think that I'm thinking of another girl, then they'll try and respond more.

seventeen: Like a jealousy-o-meter?

Eric: Yeah, right. I mean, I'll probably, like, look at another girl, and let her know that I'm looking.

seventeen: Melissa, what else do you do that gets your boyfriend jealous?

Melissa: Once I had to do a kiss on the show---it was just, like, a stupid little kiss, but it still kind of made him jealous.

seventeen: Really? What'd he say?

Melissa: He said, "That was pathetic." I told him it was no big deal, but I don't think he believed me.
