THEIR IRISH ORIGIN
MAKES
BOYZONE DIFFERENT
You've been together for three years now, what have you learnt during that period? For example in handeling your fans?
Shane: It's funny you ask that, because our security-people are always surprised to see how easy we connect with our fans. The often have the feeling: How can that be? With a lot of bands you see them walking by the screaming fans and not looking at them ones. But we have the feeling we're on the same level as our fans, and we will never treat them less. A band who waves from a distance and gets in the bus fast, that's not what fans want. No, we rather talk to them.
But what if you want to leave after a big show and a thousand fans are waiting for you?
Ronan: Our
hands will hurt from giving them autographs. (Laughing)
Shane: No, that's
different ofcourse. Then security has to have control, otherwise it will
be dangerous and we don't want any accidents to happen.
Has anything changed in you contact with you fans now that you have become so huge? Not giving you address and stuff like that?
Keith: We didn't do that anyway. But that doesn't mean we don't care about our fans, because where we can give autographs we will do so. But it won't go any further than that. Well, that's what I'm saying now, but you never know ofcourse. You can always fall in love with a fan. But normally it stops by giving them our autographs.
What have you learnt about each other?
Shane: We know each other through and through, I guess. A least for as far if you get to know another person anyway.
But do you see each other when your free?
Ronan: If we're ever free, it's usually only for a day. And we use those days to go to our families. We know we will see each other the next day, so it will be useless to go and visit each other that day. But if we're free for a couple of weeks, and we don't see each other one week, we will be on the phone because we can't help it. And then we will visit each other, because we're good friends.
Would it be possible for you to be in a band, if you're not good friends?
Keith: Maybe it would be possible, but is would be a lot less fun. But thank God, we're good friends. Closer than close, without a doubt. (Ronan spontaneous starts singing : "Aint no doubt about is.....")
Do you think you're different than other boy-bands, because you're from Ireland?
Shane: Deffinitly!!
In what way?
Ronan: Well,
we where the first boy-band from Ireland to make it in the rest of Europe.
And Ireland isn't just a country, it's a way of life. We talk different,
we look different, we act different and I think our attitude towards the
music business is different to.
Shane: Irish people
are very down to earth, maybe a little rude people. We don't get our heads
go crazy. If we meet someone, we'll just give them a hand. We don't do
this. (Does a complicated rappisch handshake) A lot of bands do that, because
they want to be cool. We don't feel good with that. Because if we'll learn
it, we will do it in Ireland to. And there they we laugh at us! By the
way, that cool stuff sounds really stupid in our accent. (In a heavy accent:
"Hey man, how' ya doin?") You are what you are and you shouldn't
try to be different.
Keith: Irish people are
really different. The girls for example. If you tell a woman, no matter
where in the world, her hair looks great, she'll take that as a compliment.
But if you do that in Ireland, her answer will be: "Oh my God, it's
ruined, isn't it?" Or just: "Get lost!"
Ronan: That's Keith oppinion!
Steve: Keith had some
bad experiences! (Laughing)
You're last cd is called 'A different beat'. How is that one doing?
Mikey: It's doing great, better then we ever dreamt. He's a bit more mature then our first cd, and we still very happy with this one.
Is there something you want to accomplish in your carreer?
Mikey: All five of us have our own dreams, wich go beyond Boyzone. This band is only one of the many dreamd we have. But after this we will do great thinks sepparatly. Personaly I would like to produce, someday make a solo-record and maybe even some acting.
If you say stuff like "after Boyzone...." a lot of fans will be panicing and thinking it will be over soon. Just like that time the rumours started....
Steve: We
hope it is clear now, we're not splitting up. It was just a story made
up by the press. We were really mad about that, by the way. We don't care
what they write about us, but when our fans get hurt, we get mad. If we
talk about 'after Boyzone...', than that is in the far future. Ones and
for
All: We're not
spitting up, we love our fans and we will keep comming back to The Netherlands
a lot of times.
