MARK OWEN ON BOYZONE
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT BOYZONE ?
I think they're building up well. They've done some new
songs which is important, and they're big enough now to control their careers.
I'm not saying they should tell their record company to get stuffed, but
it's important that we all grow up. Boyzone have got to think about where
they're going as a band, and make sure they don't get used.
WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THEM COVERING WORDS ?
I was a bit gutted, actually. I mean, it did them really
well, but if I was Boyzone I would be trying to do originals and not follow
Take That, because six months earlier we did a Bee Gees song as well. They
should've come out with theirown song and then maybe done a Bee Gees song
as well. I thought 'Who's looking after this band ?' I heard they did a
Motown medley live and three years ago so did we. I'm not slagging them
off, they're doing well, but I can't help but think they're copying Take
That.
DO YOU THINK THEY'RE DOING SO WELL BECAUSE TAKE THAT
ARN'T AROUND NOW ?
I don't mind tham copying us because I feel sorry for the
guys in the band, because they're stronger than that, and I personally
turn around to the record company and say , 'Listen, back of from now and
we'll do what we want to do. Take That split up - do you want us to do
the same ?' If I was in Boyzone I'd be p***ed off. In ten years' time they
should be able to look in the mirror and say, 'We are Boyzone and we did
it our way'.
