Today's walk: Claife Heights (Wainwright's Outlying Fells p80)

early morning on the shore of Windermere

a family of swans beside the shore

looking north up the lake from the ferry

Sawrey Inn - start of AW's circuit

Sawrey stores in the village of Far Sawrey

this sign replaces the one mentioned by AW

watercress here in AW's day but not now

first glimpse of Moss Eccles Tarn

Moss Eccles Tarn ..

.. the most attractive tarn according to AW

looking back at Moss Eccles Tarn

I made a boggy diversion to Three Dubs Tarn

the one hundred year old 1908 boathouse at Three Dubs Tarn

on the path back from Three Dubs Tarn to AW's main route

the Langdale Pikes from Wise Een Tarn

Wise Een Tarn wins my vote for the most attractive - here looking west

zooming in on Crinkle Crags, Pike o'Blisco and Bowfell

another shot of the Langdale Pikes

the small tarn marked as Reservoir of the Freshwater Biological Association by AW

a new signpost replaces AW's H-W sign ..

.. but some of the old tree markings are still visible

the first viewpoint ..

.. looking over Windermere to Ambleside and the Fairfield horseshoe ..

.. and zooming in to Froswick, Ill Bell and Yoke

a new forest road bisects AW's route but the right of way is well signed

this post marks the way to the summit which AW says is inaccessible

the trig point on top of Claife Heights ..

.. and again from the topmost rocks looking east

the continuing route is through thick forest and AW's viewpoint over the tarns is gone ..

.. but another through a wall just after joining the main track gives this view of the Windermere ferry

the descent track to Far Sawrey

looking over the wall and zooming in on Near Sawrey

the chain driven Windermere ferry
