today's walk: Swainson Knott

Monks Bridge over the River Calder

looking back after crossing this old packhorse bridge

from the east bank - a better picture could be obtained in the winter!

Swainson Knott ahead with Thornholme Farm in front

looking up the valley of Worm Gill from the bridleway

bridges over Worm Gill and the River Calder below Thornholme

Cold Fell from the slopes of Swainson Knott

lots of cows on the fell and improving weather

looking north over the Calder Valley from the slopes of Swainson Knott

the undistinguished summit of Swainson Knott marked by more bones than stones

I descended round this corner of Scalderskew Wood ..

.. not a good route as going in the wood was awful ..

.. until I joined this good track

anyone got any idea what animal might have dropped this on the track?

here's one presumably deposited earlier

Worm Gill has to be forded ..

.. too deep for dry feet so it's off with the socks and back on with the boots

Swainson Knott and my descent route from the other side of Worm Gill

lookig down the Worm Gill valley

ancient homestead beside the bridleway

from inside the homestead looking east to Seatallan

panoramic shot of the homestead

looking up the River Calder from the bridleway bridge

sheep are being gathered on the other side ..

.. and blocking the path
