KMT's basic philosophy of risk management is that for an enterprise, in the widest sense, to function effectively it needs a set of clear, well designed management systems incorporating a framework of business controls appropriate to the industry, size, culture and management style of that enterprise. Without such a system and framework, the enterprise and all those involved with it may be unwittingly subject to an unacceptable level of risk.

KMT's training methodology is to have a detailed case study, forming the core of the course, driving a series of interspersed tutorials and workshops which take participants through each step of the management system or each review stage. Small teams are led by an experienced KMT faculty member so that on-going advice and guidance is available to participants on a one-to-one basis. On longer courses participants can practice their skills in a realistic simulation of reviewing the management system and controls of the Company at the centre of the case study; this is made possible by the KMT faculty role playing members of the Company's management team and technical personnel during interviews, testing compliance, informal clearance meetings and a formal presentation of findings and improvements.
