The Lisbon area has been undergoing tremendous improvements to its transport infrastructure since the country joined the EU. The Expo 98 event further prompted improvements to the transport infrastructure. Amongst the most recent developments are further extensions to the Metro system, upgrading of the local railway system (trans-Tagus services can now be caught from the new Roma/Areeiro station), replacement of some ferry boats by catamarans, a new, integrated ticketing system for Lisbon using "intelligent" cards, etc., etc.

Left & right: Sintra Line EMU; Stagecoach Portugal bus; Sintra-Atlântico tram. Click on images for larger versions. All three scenes have changed in recent years. The Sintra Line is currently not operating from Rossio where the above (left) picture was taken due to tunnel repair works; Stagecoach Portugal has been replaced by Scott URB and the Sintra tram depot has been gutted and major refurbishment and development works were taking place at the site in summer 2005.
Sintra, with its royal palaces, lies just a few miles north-west of Lisbon. As well as being a picturesque town, set in a hilly landscape, it offers the transport enthusiast plenty of interest, not least the Sintra electric tramway which has recently been re-opened back into the town centre at Estefânia. This provides an exhilarating 45-minute trip to the coastal resort of Praia das Maçãs.

Oporto has, like Lisbon, been undergoing rapid changes in its transport system. The most obvious new feature is a new Metro system, which at summer 2005 had two lines in operation, but with extensions and more lines in progress. Trolley-bus operation has now ceased but historic trams still provide a small-scale service and new ventures, such as the re-opened Guindais funicular and hydrogen-powered buses provide interest to the transport-minded visitor. Individual pages on Oporto Transport are in the course of update during summer 2005.
