Bo-Bo. built 1961-64 by Sorefame to a French design (BB63000). 16 with UVIR and 8 with UTML. They can often be seen near Alhandra (as in the adjacent picture) on the Azambuja Line, hauling trains to and from the cement works. Painted orange.
Bo-Bo, 1401-10 were built at Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows by English Electric; the rest by Sorefame. They owe much to BR Class 20. 23 are with UVIR (2004) and 30 with UTML. 1453 is pictured right in historic blue livery, though the class is normally finished in standard orange livery. They are generally overhauled at Barreiro works, across the river from Lisbon.
Alco A1A-A1A. 6 with UTML. A North American design and build, these are the oldest diesels in main line use, deliveries having started in 1948 but they were withdrawn c.2003. Co-Co. 18 with UTML (2004). Built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in Canada and introduced to Portugal in 1973.
Pictured left, these locos are English Electric built, beloved of British rail enthusiasts as they are based on BR class 50. 9 remained with UTML until 2003 but they have now been withdrawn. Amongst their last service diagrams were the Opel car-transporter services to Azambuja, in conjunction with class 5600 locomotives.
Co-Co, designed by Alsthom, built by Sorefame, 1981. 9 with UTML (in 2004). The raked windows (loco 1913 is seen, right) are a clear indication of the French origin (CC72000) of this design. Standard orange livery is applied to the class.
Co-Co, designed by Alsthom, built by Sorefame, 1981. A passenger version of Class 1900. 17 with UVIR. Co-Co, built by Bombardier, (Canada), 1979. 11 with UTML (2004). Normally operate in northern and central Portugal on freight duties. Electric

Similar to 2500s, built 1963-64. 18 with UTML.
2601-12 are 1974 built by Alsthom/MTE; 2621-29 are 1987 built. Class 2600 locos (shown left) are similar in appearance to SNCF BB15000 class. 21 with UVIR. Orange livery.
Pictured above right, these locos are based on a Siemens/ Krauss Maffei design, like RENFE 252 class. Built by ADtranz (Sorefame), 1993-95 and capable of 200km/hr. 5 with UVIR and 23 with UTML (2004). Livery comprises red front/rear ends and grey bodies as shown in the adjacent picture. Used to haul express services e.g. Lisbon-Oporto. Broad Gauge Electric Multiple Units
Built by Sorefame, 1955/56 as three-car UTE (EMU) sets. 10 were used by USGL, mainly on the Alverca to Alcântara-Terra services (2003) but are now displaced by the double-deck class 3500s. These were a development of the 2000 class of 3-car EMUs, built from 1962. 10 were in service with USGL, 4 with USGP, 8 with UVIR in 2003, but no longer. A 1968 version of class 2050. Again, withdrawn c.2004. Built in 1970 and but in recent years were largely relegated to operating regional services over the Lisbon to Porto line and its branches. Many class 2100, 2150 and 2200 have, since 2002, been extensively refurbished as 3-car EMUS with air conditioning, new red front ends, new glazing and other improvements at a cost of two million Euros a set. This should give them a further 25 years of life and an increased max. speed of 14km/hr. Amongst the first routes to benefit were Lisbon to Tomar, Coimbra to Oporto and Barreiro to Setúbal. 18 were with UVIR in 2003. These operated services in the Porto area and in northern Portugal.
42 with USGL. These EMUs, pictured left, were the standard four-car EMUs employed on the Sintra Line (usually in two, coupled sets) and were built from 1992 onwards. Painted red. 14 with USGL. Introduced from 1998, these are the air-conditioned version of class 2300, distinguishable by the unsightly air-handling units on their roofs. Painted red. 19 with USGL. 2 with USGL. These are revamped Sorefame EMUs used on the Cascais line. 20 with USGL. As for class 3150 above.
Four-car articulated EMUs (left) built by Siemens/Bombardier (Amadora). Delivered from September 2002 for use on Oporto suburban services, with usage on the route to Penafiel starting on 18 November 2002. 5-car sets are planned for the Lisbon area and another 1500V DC version for the Cascais line. 12 of these 4-car sets, pictured right, serve with USGL, whilst the independent operator, Fertagus, had a total of 18 sets by 2001. They are double-deck units, used by CP on the Azambuja Line and on the Alverca to Queluz-Massamá services. CP sets are painted green and white, with red lining, whereas the Fertagus sets are blue and white, though some have been given overall advertising liveries.
10 with UVIR. These are six-car tilting units, pictured left, which are based on the Fiat Pendolino. They operate in Portugal as the Alfa Pendular on the Lisbon and Pragal to Porto services. Livery is predominantly red, with white and blue. Delivered from 1998-2000. Broad Gauge Railcars/DMUs

There is also a narrow-gauge version as shown, right. Many of the 25 units had been refurbished as class 350 by Spring 2003. Green and cream refurbished Class 300 railcars. 6 with UVIR, 5 with USGP.
