Glueing the Belly & Back,

Step 7 - Glueing the Belly & Back

With all the parts prepared, the instrument can begin to be assembled. The belly was glued to the body and clamped firmly in place with as many as 20 small G-clamps, the whole then fixed securely with panel pins at approximately 1" spacing all around the edges of the lyre, but not across the top of the sound chamber. The clamps were left on until the glue had hardened, approximately 4 hours according to the instructions, then removed to avoid too many pressure marks in the soft ply. Any marks made were easily sanded off.

Having allowed extra width all around the belly, the overlap needed to be sanded away before moving on to glue the back into place. An electric sander proved best for this job.
