Recovery Truck

This is the flagship model in the 1998 range of Technic models. It makes use of three pneumatic cylinders (using two tanks) to raise/lower the end of the lifting device, raise/lower the whole of the lifting device and to extend/retract the winch arm. A small wheel on the side turns the winch arm and the metal hook on the end of the arm can be controlled via a ratchet system (which doesn't work very well at all). The front wheels are steered using the usual central mechanism although the steering wheel in the cab is purely cosmetic (which makes it easy to convert from left to right hand drive :). I have never been very keen on blue LEGO but the combination of blue, black, grey and the new green coloured LEGO gives the model a pleasing look.

There seems to be a trend in the Technic range of moving away from traditional Technic beams to the non studded angled and straight beams. This set still makes use of many Technic beams but it may be one of the last sets to feature so many of them.

I seem to give a lot of sets a score or either 7 or 8 but that indicates just how good a lot of these models are. Anyway, I think this one just deserves to sit amongst the other 'eighters'.
