This is the one I have been looking for since I got back into LEGO several months ago.
I first saw it in the in-box catalogue that I got with one of my initial purchases and decided
that I must have this set. It has proved tricky to get hold of but I managed to secure a
new one from a Toys R Us in France!
You get a good idea of how big the thing will be when you open the box and see the 8cm wheels
(the completed model is 47cm long, 23cm wide and 17cm tall). It has stunning good looks with
a black exterior with yellow trim and a white and grey interior.
The main features are four wheel steering, four speed gearbox, full suspension, flip up headlights,
flip up boot and eight-cylinder engine.
It also has several nice touches like the rear cluster of lights, the bucket seats and the
restrained use of stickers that finish the look off rather than swamping it.
After saying lots of nice thing, it does have one fault.
The gearing is set up so that the wheels drive the engine rather than the other way round.
This means that the engine speed slows when changing from first through to fourth gear as the
wheels move at a constant speed. This means that you cannot add a motor to drive the engine as
the gearing is inappropriate.
The good news is that it is possible to add a new Technic motor to the main drive
shaft to drive the wheels if you add 4x2 blocks to lift the wheels off the ground. It is also
very easy to add a Technic micro motor to drive the popup headlights.
I only want one model to have the highest score of ten (*) and after all the hype that this set
has received, I was secretly hoping that the Barcode Truck (
8479
) would be the winner but this one is too gorgeous not to receive the top mark
Score:
         10/10
Pieces: 1343
* Update on the update: There are now two models with a score of ten. Can you find them :)
